Liska as a Hub of Jewish Tradition

The Jewish heritage of Liska, prominent since the 1800s, has made it a vital center for religious life. Thousands of pilgrims come annually to pay homage to Tzvi Hirsh Liska, also revered as Hershele Lisker. The village hosts more than 500 Jewish historical sites, including cemeteries and places of worship that represent a rich heritage. By the late 19th century, the Jewish population of Liska reached nearly 3,000, enriching its cultural environment. Liska’s heritage resonates in neighboring communities such as Kerestir and throughout Hungary. Today, Liska attracts around 5,000 visitors annually, each drawn by its historical and spiritual significance.

Preservation initiatives for Liska are driven by both local and global support.
